Mid Level Front-End Developer

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation (Foundation) – a private, non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening and promoting U.S. national marine sanctuaries — is seeking a Mid Level Front-End Developer who will work within the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries to design, develop and implement websites. Successful applicant will play a key role in supporting the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS) by administering headquarters level web development for the National Marine Sanctuaries and ONMS on behalf of the Foundation.

Position Overview

Successful candidate will provide support by working with the ONMS web team to design, develop, test and implement websites for the National Marine Sanctuary System.


  • Provide maintenance support and resolve technical issues related to ONMS websites.
  • Migrating content to Bootstrap-based templates.
  • Convert comps into web applications that are scalable, accessible, and render effectively across multiple browsers and device types.
  • Ensure ONMS websites follow NOAA, DOC and OMB requirements.
  • Ensure all 508 accessibility requirements are met.
  • Ensure videos are web optimized and captioned.
  • Make recommendations for better User Experience based on sound reasoning and best practices.
  • Analyze and solve problems related to websites and digital products.
  • Assist in special projects for the Education and Outreach Division as needed.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in web development or graphics design.
  • 4+ years of web design and development experience preferred
  • Strong understanding of HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript
  • Good understanding of asynchronous request handling, partial page updates, and AJAX
  • Understanding of basic UX principles and what makes a great user experience
  • Experience with version control and deployment using Git
  • Experience with Wordpress a plus
  • Some experience with .NET (VB.Net, C#) a plus
  • Some experience Microsoft Azure Web Services
  • Extensive experience building responsive websites.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to show initiative, multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • A critical eye for design and usability
  • Must be comfortable asking questions to ensure understanding of requirements, problems, goals, etc. of projects
  • Maintain and improve personal skill set and knowledge base


The position will be based in the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries in Silver Spring, MD. The Front-End Developer will coordinate day to day activities with Web & New Media Coordinator in ONMS.

Compensation and Benefits:

Salary $60,000 - 70,000 with benefits. The Foundation offers a competitive benefits package that includes health and dental insurance, life insurance, and a retirement savings plan.
