Shelter is looking for a UX Researcher to help us better understand how our users are using our digital advice, content, webchat, telephony service etc.

Our growing and evolving cross-functional digital team spans front and back end development, UX/UI, content production, social media, analytics and more. We already do some brilliant service design work that affects our digital offering, our helpline and our centres around the country. We also have lead responsibility for developing and implementing Shelter’s overall digital strategy and making sure best practice is applied to all online activities. And, with a new leadership team working on a fresh organisational strategy, we’re expanding our in-house capacity to meet the challenges ahead. In short, there’s never been a better time to join us.
A great opportunity to shape how user experience and design works for Shelter, your challenge will be to research details of unmet user need, identify opportunities and validate the value of new ideas to our users. Put simply, you’ll act as an advocate for our users. What’s more, as part of an agile product team, you’ll work closely with product specialists and stakeholders to validate opportunities to create new service features or improve and iterate existing ones. Conducting user research, developing metrics and benchmarks and feeding that insight into our prioritisation process, our product roadmaps, our designs and our development sprints – all are aspects of this interesting role.
You have a passion for user-centred design, helping people and getting things right. You’ll need to know how to discover user needs and you’ll need knowledge of accessibility and usability issues, as well as business objectives. You’re also effective at using user insight to focus product hypotheses and validate outcomes, and working closely with product managers, strategists, designers and web developers alike.
Familiarity with Agile, Lean, Scrum and product-based approaches and how they relate to design and user research is important too. And if you’ve worked in a cross-functional digital team and/or have knowledge of modern design and prototyping tools, even better. At the moment, we’re using Sketch and Marvel, alongside pen, paper, post-its and whiteboards. But, as you know, tools change all the time.
