Senior Front-end Web Developer

The Marketing Communications department is setting new standards for interactive design experiences created for higher education. Under the general direction of the Chief Brand Officer, this position will lead technical execution of the department’s web strategies and vision.

The incumbent is responsible for providing website detail design, development, documentation, testing, publication, monitoring and maintenance of the end product. He or she will also evaluate and recommend new technologies as needed to sustain and extend high development standards.

This position requires advanced technical skills, strong conceptual thinking, impeccable attention to detail, and an appreciation for visual design. It also requires close collaboration with designers and writers to assure that final web presentation conveys the desired messages in an engaging, usable way.

Job Duties

  1. Website design, coding, and testing
  2. Translate requirements and visual design into final presentation for website development or enhancement.
  3. Design, code, test, publish and maintain websites according to project specifications and group standards using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and maintaining cross­-platform and browser presentation.

  4. Evaluate and interpret the functional business needs and expectations to produce innovative interactive experiences.

  5. Contribute to defining the interactive design models for new and existing projects by participating in discussions and creating site flows and wireframes.

  6. Formulate strategies and criteria for selecting appropriate platforms for website and interactive experiences to obtain desired results.

  7. Determine the feasibility and technical requirements of projects given the stated goals.

  8. Research

  9. Analyze, research, organize and develop other technology related projects as assigned

  10. Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Minimum 5-­7 years of applicable experience in web design/website development in an environment working closely with designers. (Online portfolio with examples of previous work and code samples will be reviewed.)
  • Demonstrated experience building websites in Drupal ­­ including custom theme development and management of core and contributed modules in a Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP environment and other CMS platforms (WordPress, Cascade Server).
  • Demonstrated skill at translating complex Photoshop comps to clean, semantic markup with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Proven proficiency in industry standard concepts, practices and procedures using HTML5, CSS/SASS, JavaScript libraries (Jquery, Backbone, Underscore, React etc), frameworks (Bootstrap, Materialize, etc) and reusability of code.
  • Working knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, XD, Sketch, Invision.
  • Thorough understanding of cross­platform coding and browser compatibility issues and of web design in relation to site development.
  • Advanced experience with planning for deployment and creation of feedback mechanisms.
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating and recommending appropriate technology platforms to meet project objectives.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to lead and work on cross-­functional teams and foster the team’s commitment to tasks.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with an ability to express complex technical concepts in business terms and complex business concepts in technical terms.
  • Self­-motivated and curious, and a critical thinker who can analyze complex issues and deliver clear recommendations to leadership for meeting project objectives.
  • Experience with ADA compliance issues to ensure that web site information is accessible to people with viewing, hearing, motor, learning and/or cognitive disabilities and demonstrated knowledge of issues and guidelines.
  • Deep knowledge and use of best practices through relevant experience across web­-based disciplines and technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform competently under pressure; able to handle interruptions and changes without losing productivity.
  • Knowledge of HTML e­mail distribution systems.
