Webmaster
Does HTML get you excited? Live for CSS? Is LAMP more than something you use to light up a room?
McKinley Irvin needs a webmaster. We’re a law firm & more: you’ll be driving online efforts for the law firm, a real estate company & a creative company. As webmaster, you will:
- Help us create, execute, measure & adjust a long-term web strategy.
- Manage existing web sites, hosting configuration & basic web security.
- Build new, database-driven web sites.
- Implement & manage WordPress based web sites.
- Keep sites in compliance with best practices, including SEO best practices.
The perfect candidate can build & launch web sites using the LAMP stack, be a web jack-of-all-trades, & learn along the way.
Technical skills
Show your geek credentials:
- Complete knowledge of HTML 4, XHTML 1.1, CSS 2. Some knowledge of CSS 3 & HTML5 desirable.
- Basic javascript expertise. jQuery or similar library experience desirable.
- PHP. You must understand form handling, loops & logic & how to optimize PHP application performance.
- MySQL. Must be able to set up, modify & populate a MySQL database. Understanding of indexes, MySQL performance a plus.
- Apache. Must understand how to configure a web site using Apache.
- Basic ability to work in a Linux environment. At a minimum, know how to navigate to/rename/move/modify files from the command line.
- WordPress experience. Must have a thorough understanding of WordPress administration.
- Basic UI design. You need to be able to suggest site navigation improvements & work within an existing template without making designers weep with despair.
- Basic understanding of SEO best practices. If you think this means ‘edit the meta keywords tag’, you need to do some reading before you come in for your interview.
- Some knowledge of web security. If you still leave the password set as ‘password’, you could be in for a rough ride.
- You must know how to build an SEO-compliant site from scratch, using a text editor or text-driven HTML editor; using a visual editor is not sufficient
Those other skills
- Ambitious. You need to want to kick butt. If you intend to ‘do as you’re told’ & quietly collect your paycheck, this is not the job for you. When us non-web-geeks suggest something that makes you want to curl up in a ball under your desk, you should be willing to speak up in a civil manner.
- Self teaching & a good teacher. You must be good at learning new things on your own. As a web geek, you know how fast things change. We’ll rely on you to keep up and teach us non-web-literate folk (you’ll work closely with marketing & management).
- A bit of a marketer. Ideally we’d like you to think about SEO & social media. You don’t need to be an internet marketing expert, but your ability to connect with one will be important.
