Job Offer: Web Designer with UX (Central London, UK)

Mendeley is a start-up developing social software and Web 2.0 tools to transform the way science is done. Our vision is to create a “Last.fm for Research”. We’re funded by and working with some of the people who built Skype and Last.fm, as well as prominent academics from world-class universities. This year, we have won the Plugg “European Start-Up of the Year” award, the TechCrunch Europas Award 2009 for “Best Social Innovation That Benefits Society” and were finalists at “The Next Web Start-Up of the Year”.

Mendeley consists of two parts: Mendeley Desktop, free cross-platform software (Win, Mac, Linux) for managing and sharing research papers, and Mendeley Web, a website for managing research papers online, discovering research trends and connecting to like-minded academics. If you want to be part of it, here’s your chance: We’re currently looking for a talented Web Designer with UX to join our Mendeley team!

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
• Generating new design solutions:
o Create interface prototypes and design proposals both for our desktop software and website
o Develop and maintain Mendeley’s visual style
o Develop advertising concepts
• Being fully responsible for the layout, visual appearance and usability of the company website, ensuring that brand continuity is maintained
• Improving product engagement
• Working closely with developers to guide implementation and improve and maintain usability

WHAT YOU SHOULD IDEALLY BRING
• In depth knowledge of current web-design trends and techniques
• Extensive experience using Photoshop/Illustrator or similar programs
• Front-end web development skills using XHTML/CSS
• Experience in the area of UI & web design, UX & usability
• An existing understanding of the UX of academic researchers, a plus
• Software engineering and development experience, a bonus
• A flexible attitude with proven experience of working in a small team
