Front-End Developer

Penguin Books Australia is looking for a dedicated Front-End Developer to complement our team of web and application developers. Our portfolio of websites, webapps and native applications are growing at an exponential rate, and require someone to help us deliver internal and consumer facing digital products. You will be just as comfortable aiding designers by being part of the UI development process as you will be using your extensive client-side programming skills to implement frontends for websites and apps. Most of our projects involve agile development methodologies, so you will be working alongside back-end developers and need to have an understanding of server-side technologies.

This is not a role for a web designer or someone looking to move up from a designer role into a templating role.

You will be working with a dynamic team that is highly innovative within a corporate environment. Your day may include:

  • Chipping away at frontend implementation tasks as part of scheduled projects
  • Liaising with developers, designers (print and online), publicists and marketing managers
  • Drop-in tasks for high priority campaigns and projects and hotfixes for critical bugs
  • Helping put together wireframes for specification documentations
  • Optimising existing interfaces using analytics information and variation testing
  • Occasionally being subjected to dubstep remixes of our YouTube videos, lolcats and other topical internet memes
  • Committing back into the community any updates that are made to Open-Source projects

To become part of this team, you will need to have:

  • At minimum 3 years front end development experience, working as part of a team of web developers
  • A portfolio of websites/webapps that demonstrate intricate knowledge of HTML/CSS, browser quirks, best practices, standards etc
  • Ability to develop and implement interfaces using boilerplates and frameworks to deliver responsive design which renders on browsers and mobile devices
  • Experience writing efficient, reusable, object oriented Javascript using the jQuery library that implements AJAX methods to handle JSON and XML formatted data
  • Examples of experimentation with HTML5 structures and CSS3 properties
  • Ability to discuss, at length, the cons of supporting IE6
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills that can be utilised to be a point of contact for internal staff, as well as third party service providers and external stakeholders

While not required, these qualities would elevate you from a good candidate, to an awesome candidate:

  • A desire to create simple, efficient and elegant solutions and an aversion to CSS hacks
  • Exposure to Drupal, our CMS of choice and active involvement in Open-Source communities
  • Familiar with version control using SVN, or better yet, GIT
  • Ability to code in PHP, Python, C++, Java, or Objective-C
  • Exposure to webapp development using frameworks like Cappuccino or SproutCore
  • An appreciation for books, and opinions on literature

This role is a 12 month fixed term contract based in our Camberwell office. Please note we will be relocating to new, state of the art office facilities at Docklands in August 2012.
